History

When was the Dole® company started?
The founder, James (Jim) Drummond Dole, took a trip to Hawaii in 1899. In 1901, he decided that pineapple was the way to make his fortune and the first packing was in 1903. The Dole® brand name first appeared in 1934 on cans of pineapple juice.
What was the first Dole® juice on the market?
Canned pineapple juice. The second product was canned Pineapple Pink Grapefruit juice.
When was the Dole® juice business purchased?
The Dole® juice business was purchased by the Joseph E. Seagram Company in 1995.

Our Juice

I'm having trouble finding my favorite flavor of Dole Juice.
Can you help me?
We have an on-line Product Locator tool for you to use. Click here
Are all of your juices pasteurized?
Dole chilled juices, which are sold in cartons, as well as Dole shelf stable juices, sold in plastic bottles, are “gently” pasteurized. Pasteurization is a heat treatment that inactivates the naturally occurring enzymes and kills bacteria, yeast, and mold that would otherwise contribute to the rapid deterioration of the juice. Frozen concentrate is heat treated by an evaporation process and then frozen.
Are natural flavors used in any of your products?
Natural flavors are components from fruit and other natural ingredients. Many natural flavors are used as flavor enhancers. Any use of natural flavors in a particular product will be indicated in the ingredient list.
Does the water used in the concentrates contain fluoride?
The water used in our juices made from concentrate is from the municipal water supply. Generally speaking the average fluoride content is less than 2 parts per million. This is based upon recommendations made by the U.S. Public Health Service that public water fluoridation levels range from 0.7 to 1.2 pm.
Why does the frozen concentrate contain filtered water?
To meet the FDA standard for labeling a product 100% juice (established guidelines for each juice, regardless of brand), it is necessary to add filtered water to those concentrates which have a higher level of dissolved solids, natural sugars, minerals, or proteins. Since these juices are highly concentrated, it is necessary for us to add different amounts of water so that the juice will be single strength when you mix it with three cans of water, as directed.
Can the juice be used past the expiration date?
Juices and juice beverages have a limited shelf life and we do not recommend using them past the “Best if Used By” date. We suggest you check the date before buying and allow yourself plenty of time to use it.
What is clarified pineapple juice?
It is pineapple juice that has been filtered to remove the pulp and create a lighter body and consistency.
What kinds of sugars are in the pineapple juice?
The pineapple juice contains sucrose, fructose, and glucose. These are natural and not added sugars.
Does the pineapple juice contain phosphorus?
We do not analyze for phosphorus in our normal nutrient analysis. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture food composition source, pineapple juice contains approximately 20mg of phosphorus per 8 ounces (1 cup).
Why don't you import pineapple from Hawaii?
There are several reasons why Hawaiian pineapple is no longer used in our juices. First, there is limited land available for pineapple growing. Also, pineapple from Hawaii is used primarily for the fresh fruit market, not the juice market.
Does Dole® have a plant in Hawaii that offers tours?
Castle & Cooke, Inc., former parent company of Dole Food Company, Inc., owns the Dole Plantation. It is open every day of the year except Christmas and is located 25 miles north of Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The Dole Plantation is a visitors' center with a variety garden featuring 21 types of pineapple from all over the world. In addition to their goal of growing the world's largest pineapple, the Plantation offers a very popular attraction - the world's largest maze, which features pineapple plants grown in the shape of a pineapple. Visitors can purchase items at the plantation store such as Dole logo items, pineapple candy, pineapple knives, chocolate covered pineapple & macadamia nuts, and Plantation Brand Chocolates. The plantation also accept phone orders.

Packaging

Does freezing plastic bottles cause breast cancer?
Information floating around the internet about frozen plastic bottles causing breast cancer is false. It cites Johns Hopkins as the source of the information. To counter this hoax or urban legend, Dr. Rolf Halden, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, went on record in the June 24, 2004 John's Hopkins School of Public Health Newsletter. He noted that if freezing plastic bottles were to do anything, it would probably make the beverage inside safer to drink because "freezing actually works against the release of chemicals."
Can I freeze the carton?
Cartons are not designed with freezer storage in mind. Expansion occurs during freezing and this can damage the container, resulting in leakage.
Where is the expiration code located on your packages?
The "best if used by" date is printed at the top of cartons, on the bottom of frozen juice cans, and on the necks or caps of plastic bottles.

Kosher

Are your juices kosher?
Most of our juices are kosher. Look for the Kosher Symbol symbol printed on the side panel containing the nutrition and ingredient information.
Why are some of your 100% juices not kosher?
Some of our 100% juices contain grape juice and the grape juice isn't kosher.
Are your juices kosher for Passover?
None of our juices are marked kosher specifically for Passover. The juices that have been certified are kosher for year-round use.
Is any gelatin or animal by-products used in the processing of the apple juice found in Dole® orange strawberry banana?
The apple concentrate we use is Kosher and does not contain gelatin or any other animal by-products.
